Interview

There is one main reason why people attend college, and that is to earn an education towards ones preferred profession. What would happen if the profession one desired was not available out of college? Even worse what would happen if ones preferred profession was not what they thought it would be after college. The preferred job I want out of college is a policeman in the city of Ormond Beach. I wanted to personally see what the current status of a Ormond Beach police officer is so over break I decided to interview a current officer on the force.

The officer I interviewed had been working at the Ormond Beach Police office for 13 years. He is currently a Sergent on the force. Sergent D.W. Smith ( Donald Williams) was like me, he knew since he could remember that he wanted to be a police officer and serve the community. As assigned the first question I asked him was if I could make a good living off of being a police officer. He gave me the typical answer that almost everyone is aware of, he told me it is hard these days to make a good living as a police officer. Which is ironic because police officers impact our everyday lives. D.W. and I were both in agreement with that statement. I then went on to ask him if there were any available jobs on the force. He told me that unfortunately due to budget cuts, jobs in the department are hard to come by. This was discouraging news for me seeings how I wanted a job on the force one day. Sergent D.W. did give me encouraging words by telling me there will always be openings in some cities for police officers. Problems will always pop up when it comes to getting a job however, there will always be a solutions. People then ask why go to college if I want to be a cop? The answer is very simple. I want to climb up in rank when If I get hired down the road. I would then want to maybe one day get a desk job as a detective. D.W. told me the best way to becoming a detective would be having a college degree in Criminology which I am currently pursuing. During the interview D.W. was called to an accident, so I asked him one more question. I asked him if he had any advice to give me, he told me to " never give up and to never take no as an answer. School is the most important way to reach my goals." I took his word to heart and to this day I try my hardest in every class.

As you can see my job search looks probable in the future. There will be many jobs available however, will it be with the department I want it to be with? I feel I have an advantage due to the fact that I was a police explorer for two years with the Ormond Beach Police Department. I know many of the officers which will give me an advantage in the long run.
